Reaching

Artist Statement:
"Reaching" was originally designed simply as an exercise in attempting to make a piece especially dynamic in the round, specifically referencing back to my favorite elements of design by late Renaissance and Baroque masters such as Michelangelo and Bernini, but expressed as clean and simply as I could, minus the frills and extravagant detail I often enjoy but find distracting. Following examples such as Bernini's David, I tried to use curves intended to visually lead the bystander around the sculpture, and intersecting diagonal lines meant to create a different view from every direction. The title Reaching actually comes at the suggestion of a friend who pointed out that it looks somewhat reminiscent of an open hand, but I find especially appealing as it also alludes to the visual intrusion of the viewer's personal space Baroque sculpture is frequently so good at.

This sculpture captures the rooster not as a static symbol, but as a living, breathing creature - full of energy, movement, and purpose. Crafted from recycled tires, the material itself mirrors the resilience and resourcefulness of nature, where nothing is wasted, and everything finds a second life. In this piece, I named to depict the rooster as it exists in reality: alert, dynamic, and ready to greet the world with its powerful presence. It is a testament to the strength found in everyday life, a reminder that even the most common creatures possess a spirit of determination and renewal. By working with discarded materials, I not only bring new life to forgotten objects but also invite viewers to see the beauty in what often goes unnoticed - the raw vitality of nature and the power of transformation.

Artist Statement:
After leaving my career as an electrical technician and
machinist, I had time to explore three-dimensional art. I began making traditional mosaic sculptures and enjoyed the results. However, they are not well-suited for permanent
installation outdoors and cannot withstand the freeze/thaw of our harsh Minnesota winters. So, in 2010 I bought a welder and started experimenting making metal sculptures.
I discovered that metal provides greater flexibility and working with scrap offers a wide variety of material that
often influence the design of my work. Not only can my
pieces be permanently installed outdoors, but I love turning scrap into art.

the day, as a celebration of light and color, and as an

The work I have been engaged in over the last 30 years has been primarily work in public art. I am interested in work that can operate on many levels, including forms that are able to transcend their limitations. I am interested in work that is physically rooted yet speaks to the spirit. My work strives to be straightforward in the most roundabout way, it is the smoke that can reveal the laser. There are no simple answers to matters of the heart. The work samples I have included are a representation of my desire to create work that is accessible, yet sheds light on the complexity of the human condition. I have developed this work in my studio, and it reflects my interests and my desire to come to terms with a variety of issues. These issues include love, family, history, cause and effect, and our connection to the natural world. I was also very interested in trying to work in a way that forgoes forced cleverness and obfuscation, yet is connective and provocative. Thank you.
